Down With "Down With..."

I'm really grateful to everyone these days, for all the correspondence....Leaf Questions, Other film questions, "Hey Rocky is on Cable" questions...and this one "when did you film 'Down With The Boogey'?"

That's the one I'm going to answer now.

I'd been looking for a project to work on with Alex Gasbarro, who was just coming off his award winning turn in a film called "White Girl Young Pretty", we both were reading this existential comedy, and decided it wasn't the right project. Alex sent me a script for his next film, and I was going to read it.

Eventually.

I read everything, it just takes me some time to do it. Plus I was knee deep in "LEAF" pre production and was on the football field everyday working on my football snaps and passes (funny enough, I cut most of that stuff...though you can see me throw in that crusty old teaser trailer for LEAF I snuck out last year). Until I get a call, from the director himself, Jack Knapp.

It was pretty simple "Hey I know you have the script, you should take a look at it". He was a nice guy, and a huge fan of THE CLASH.

The Clash (U.S. Version)

So I decided to read the script, I had an hour free before I went out to work on the football throws. There it was in bold type "Down With The Boogey". I had heard of this project, it'd been picking up steam. I started reading. Now to be honest, I was in no hurry to return to the horror genre. I worked really hard on "Killer Instinct" and when that came out, the studio and distributors were fighting...the film was pushed back...and when all was said and done, a very heavily edited version of Killer Instinct came out....and dogged by bad reviews and delays....it sort of flopped around and was never heard from again. It was a bummer, and I wasn't sure that genre would have ever worked for me. It's currently availablae on Amazon for 97 cents.

Killer Instinct (2000)

Until "Down With The Boogey, PAGE 13", the line was "The Boogeyman is hanging out, and enjoying a delicious ice cream cone". 13 pages was all it took. I called Jack back and said "this is great. I've never read anything like this". So we met up at some Irish place, talked movies, the joy of The Pogues, and he recommended Fatboy Slim's first band. I can't remember the name of that band, but they have a catchy song called "Happy Hour Again", anyway within 90 minutes, we were convinced. It would be a great great thing for me to join "The Boogey".

So there it was...it was a pretty fun shoot....REALLY late nights, but a lot of laughs and ideas we'd all come up with on the spot, my last night was my only night with that entire cast. I felt like a new kid on the first day of school, they'd all had so many scenes together, so they knew each other. I pretty much shot most of my role with Alex. Funny enough, with LEAF starting a week away, I almost broke my hand on that last scene. But I did see a cut of BOOGEY about 3 months ago, and Jack really outdid himself. Wait til you all see this. You'll laugh, you'll yell, you'll laugh some more. The most common feedback I'd had on the LEAF tour (where we played the BOOGEY trailer) was "I'm not sure what I just watched, but I gotta see this movie" that sums it up. I can't wait til this Friday (May 16th), in the Garden State, where everyone can see it for the first time. Wait til you see what Jack cooked up. I saw what he had in mind on page 13 of the script....now you all get to see. I'll be there, I hope to see you all there. Come find me. I'll have snacks.

Until We Meet Again (In Jersey, with snacks),

We're at BROADWAY THEATER of Pitman, 43 South Broadway, Pitman, NJ, 08071 AT 8:30 PM

Take care and be good,
TC
